Literary Ladies Summer Book Challenge - 1st Month "Progress Report"

Today is my first check-in for the Literary Ladies Summer Book Challenge (hosted by Kari @ bykariparker, Kristen @ seeyouinaporridge, and Krystal (aka Kay) @ thekaytimes).

There are 10 book categories and, to date, I have completed 5.  Here are the categories I've completed and the corresponding books I read:

*For clarification purposes, the book titles that appear in red link to my review of that book.  Just a little FYI.

One word title book - Grey by E.L. James
(576 pgs, 3/5 rating, read 6.21 - 6.26.15)

YA book - Looking for Alaska by John Green

(221 pgs, 3/5 rating, read 6.27 - 6.29.15)

Book by non US author - A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

(368 pgs, 5/5 rating, the author is Swedish, read 7.6 - 7.7.15)

Suspenseful book - The River is Dark by Joe Hart
(223 pgs, 2/5 rating, read 7.10 - 7.15.15)

Book recommended by a blogger, "Goodreads-er,"  etc. - Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

(272 pgs, 4/5 rating, recommended by my friend Jen @ Goodreads, read 7.16.15)

Below are the categories I've yet to fulfill (and books I think I will read for each category).  As I mentioned in initial link up post, my preliminary book list is totally subject to change (as evidenced by crossed out titles.)

  • Book that have been on TBR list for 1 year or more - My Bluegrass Baby
  • Book w/ kickass female character - Fear Nothing (DD Warren series)
  • Book that has been/will be made into a movie/TV show - Paper Towns *Update: Reconstructing Amelia (HBO movie)
  • Book written by comedian or celeb (or memoir) - My Mother was Nuts
  • Book about summer, has summer in title, or is any way related to summer - The Summer I Turned Pretty *Update: Sweet (takes place during the summer)

The next check-in is August 21.  Check back then for my next update.  Thanks for stopping by!

Oh, and as always, feel free to comment below.  I promise, I do not bite.  :)

    1. I thought it was OK. It's one of those books that I don't regret reading, but I probably wouldn't re-read. It was interesting hearing the story from his perspective. Click on the title above in my post and it will take you to my review that has more details. :)

    1. Thank you very much! Grey was OK. I liked it and I enjoyed hearing the story from his perspective, but I didn't like it well enough to re-read. Click on the book title above and it will direct you to the review of Grey. It contains more of my thoughts on the book. :)

  4. I'm about half way through Grey and it's interesting being inside his head. I initially compared it to You because he is definitely obsessed with her but now it's kind of dragging on. Wish it would have been all three books in his POV and rolling my eyes if all of them are released in his POV. Five books down and we're not even half way done, you're doing great!!

    1. Thanks! Fortunately, several of the books I read for another book challenge also worked for the categories in the Literary Ladies challenge. Yeah, I suspect EL James will probably release 2 more POV books to complete the rest of the series. Not sure if I have any interest in knowing any more or not. If and when that does happen, I might be at a place where I just simply say, "Nah, I'm good..." :)

  5. I have heard of none of these. I read your review of A Man Called Ove and that sounds interesting, although the character development for him sounds a lot like the old man in Up. Who wrote "My Mother was Nuts"?

    1. My Mother Was Nuts is by Penny Marshall. Are you familiar with her? She played Laverne in the 1970s sitcom Laverne and Shirley. She also directed movies (Big, Awakenings, A League of Their Own, Cinderella Man). I am dating myself by saying this, but I grew up with her works all around me. :)

Yes, I can definitely see the similarities between Ove and the old man from UP. I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters that infiltrated Ove's life. Some of the moments were hysterical (in my opinion).
