Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Things & Quitting

Today I am linking up with The Broke and the Bookish and participating in their weekly Top Ten Tuesday feature post. (To learn more about TTT, click here.) This week's theme is:

Ten Bookish Things I Want to Quit
or Have Quit
(ten book series I think I'm going to abandon, ten bookish habits I want to quit, ten authors I quit reading, ten types of books I'm quitting, ten tropes I want to stop reading about, ten books I marked as DNF recently, etc.)
Get as creative as you want!
I really thought this one would be a piece of cake, a walk in the park, but boy was I mistaken!  It's was a lot harder than I thought!  It may be due to the fact that I don't quit things easily, not even books.  So, I have taken some creative liberty, after all they said I could be as creative as I wanted, and compiled a hodgepodge list:

Seven (because I can't think of 10) Random Bookish Things
in Which Quitting is the Common Denominator

  1. A Book I Wish I Would've Quit - Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.  Why? Well, because having to use a dictionary to look up at least 3 words per page gets a bit old after the 50th page.  It got to a point where it just wasn't fun anymore.  I wasted a month of my life on that book.
  2. An Author I Quit Reading - Nicholas Sparks.  Why, you ask?  Because I know good and well before I even read the first page how the book is going to end - with me in tears, blubbering like an idiot.
  3. Book to Movie Adaptations that I Quit Watching - Any movie based on a book by Nicholas Sparks.  (See #2)
  4. Book That I Quit/DNF (did not finish) - Knit Two by Kate Jacobs.  I was perfectly OK with the ending of The Friday Night Knitting Club and the only reason I attempted the sequel was because it was the selection of the book club I belonged in at the time.  Once I figured out that I really didn't care what happened to the characters, I quickly discarded the sequel.
  5. Figurative Language I Wish an Author Would Have Quit Using in the First Book - Any reference to Ana's Inner Goddess in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.  She glares.  She dances not only the samba but also the merengue.  She pole vaults, back flips off podiums, and does cartwheels.  She looks like someone just stole her ice cream.  Gimme a break...  By the time it was all said and done, all I really wanted her Inner Goddess to do was run for her life in fear of the reader from Louisville who was going to punch her in the throat!  LOL!

  6. Series I Have Quit - The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.  Once upon a time, I LOVED this series.  This series got me reading again after a LONG hiatus.  I laughed out loud at some of Stephanie's crazy antics and the hilarious situations she found herself in.  I quit after the 18th book.  The series is tired as are the characters.  They are stuck in a time warp where no one evolves or ages, not even Rex the hamster.
  7. A Book I Almost Quit, But Didn't (and for which I'm glad) - Divergent by Veronica Roth.  I actually had 2 failed attempts at Divergent before successfully reading it through from beginning to end.  For whatever reason, I just wasn't in the right mind frame during those two attempts and could not for the life of me get into it.  I guess the third time was a charm!

So, how about you?  What are some books you have quit, wish you would've quit, or are glad that you didn't quit?

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. OH dang!! I read a couple Nicholas Sparks books and yes I quit him too! I don't watch his movies either. For the EXACT same reason! There's never a real HEA and I cry WAY too much. I want escapism in my books, which means give my HEA dammit!
Oh, Stephanie!! That poor misguided girl! I LOVED the books too but gave up after book 16. She needs to pick Ranger already!
As for the Inner Goddess? lol I never read the 50 Shades books. I'll pass thank you!

    1. At least I'm not the only one who has quit Nicholas Sparks! I know all these ppl who absolutely love his books and I'm thinking, "You like to be a crying, blubbering mess intentionally?" LOL! Yes, and Miss Plum needs to sh*t or get off the pot. By the end of the 18th book, I really didn't care who she chose just as long as she chose someone.

  2. Oh boy I totally agree about Nicholas Sparks! My mom was just telling me the other day how she loved his newest book and I just can't even go there anymore...although I do enjoy a good therapeutic crying session every once in awhile LOL. I loved the Divergent series (except for the ending, which is a feeling I know many others share) :)

  3. The one about Fifty Shades made me laugh! I haven't read the book, but just imagining that is so hilarious to me :p Great list!!

  4. I actually quit reading 50 Shades - but before I put it down I did hate the 'inner goddess' stuff. E. L. James definitely could have quit that particular writing quirk. Great list! And thanks for stopping by my blog.

  5. I've read the first couple of Stephanie Plum novels and I found them enjoyable enough, but not much to write home about.

I've often wondered if I should go back to them. But hearing your comments (and those of others) I think I'll just leave them alone.

Thanks for stopping by Nashville Book Worm!

I'm always sad when an author seems to just be publishing a new installment for the sake of a new installment rather than having a new story to tell.

    1. That is exactly what I think is going on with Evanovich. She has a formula that works and she is not going to deviate from it. I agree, it is sad. I just prefer it when characters evolve, age, grow, etc. instead of staying static.
