E is for Ericka

Erica, Erika, Erykah, Ericka, or one of the many other spelling variations is the feminine form of the name Eric, which is derived from the Old Norse name Eirikr.

The name has been used in Scandinavia since the early eighteenth century and means "eternal ruler," "honorable ruler," and/or "noble."

Erica was listed in the Top 50 girls names in the United States in 1970s and 80s.

I suspect much of the name's popularity during those decades may correlate to the popularity of the ABC soap opera All My Children, which was wildly popular in the 70s and 80s. AMC featured a long running character named Erica Kane (played by Susan Lucci).

As of 2014, the name was ranked 657th in popularity (according to Nameberry.com).

Ericka is the name of the unreleased, 1997 self titled debut album of R&B singer Ericka Yancey.  Apparently, the first two released singles from the album didn't do very well on the Billboard charts, so the album was shelved.

I share my name with Erykah Badu, an American singer-songwriter, record producer, activist, and actress.  She was born Erica Wright.

Erica is a genus of roughly 860 species of flowering plants in the family Ericaceae.

Although my spelling is unique, it's not nearly as unique as this variation:

According to Urban Dictionary, Ericka (my spelling) is defined as:
I must admit that I really like this definition. ;) And, no...I didn't write it.  LOL!

  1. Airwrecka? A wrecker of air... too funny! Ericka is a strong beautiful name. (I've never found a key chain or a mug or ANYthing with my name on it.) I'm a visiting minion with the Joyful Brigade. Have fun!

    1. I understand your pain, for I have ZERO souvenirs or anything with my name on it, unless is was specifically made for me. (And even then, there's a 50/50 chance there will be a goof in the spelling!) Thanks for stopping by!

  2. So I bet you have to spell your name all the time :) Our last name can be spelled "on" or "en". Ours happens to be "on" so we are always spelling it and half the time it gets right :)

Airwrecka, my gosh that is very different; haven't seen that one before!

    Pretty name Ericka is :)

    1. Oh, lordy, yes! All. The. Time! For the past two decades, when I have to give my name, I automatically say, "Ericka. E-R-I-C-K-A." I learned that it is best to just go ahead and spell it. And, as you said, half the time they still get it wrong! LOL! Thank you for the compliment!

  3. Great post. Airwrecka. That was hilarious. The funniest part was that she didn't know it was unusual. Seriously??? Oh well.

If you will add the Google Friend Connect Button it will be much easier to follow you. If you don't know how I can give you instructions. It's not hard, but it used to be easier.
