Recently Read - Vol. 17 (March '17)

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' into the future...  - Steve Miller Band

I always find myself shocked when the time for this link up rolls around again. I'm always like, "What?  It's been a month already?"  My folks sure were right, it just goes faster as you get older.

Well, I finished two books in March, so this post will be short and sweet.  Oddly enough, I gave both of them a rating of 3.5.  Here's what I read last month:

The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley
Read February 27 - March 19 | Format: Audiobook | My Rating: 3.5/5

It's no secret that I love a man in a kilt and that I periodically get a hankering for a romance involving a man who wears one.  This is the third book in the Highland Pleasures series and features Cameron McKenzie.  (Earlier books feature two other McKenzie brothers, Ian and Mac.)

Although I liked this novel, I didn't like it as well as I liked the previous two.  The plot was loose and, if I may be frank, the romance scenes were not as hot as scenes from the previous books in the series.  I liked the characters well enough, but it just seemed a little lukewarm in comparison.

The Fold by Peter Clines
Read March 19-31 | Format: Audiobook | My Rating: 3.5/5

I rarely, and I mean rarely, read science fiction/fantasy.  The main reason I stepped out of my comfort zone with this book was to fulfill a category for Erin's latest book challenge (to read a book from a genre I rarely, if ever, read).  The interesting thing, though, is that I already had this book in my Audible wishlist for some unknown reason. Go figure.

The Fold's premise is this:  a group of scientists invent a teleportation device that doesn't break down, transport, and then reassemble the subject in a "beam me up Scotty Star Trek" sort of way, but rather "folds" space and decreases the distance the subject has to travel.

The mystery at the heart of this story, what is happening to the people who go through "the door," hooked me early on and kept me listening, sometimes long after my commute ended.

I thought the first 75% of the book was utterly fascinating.  Then, sadly, with approximately a quarter of the book remaining, the tone of the story changed and it reminded me of an over the top, testosterone driven Hollywood action film.

This book had the potential to be a solid 4, maybe even a 4.5, but the last quarter of the book zapped it for me.  I found the ending annoying and unsatisfying.

What have you read lately?  Anything interesting that I should add to my TBR? As always, thanks for stopping by!

  3. I'm always amused by how many people choose "science fiction" as their rarely read genre. It makes me wonder who actually DOES read science fiction ;-)

    1. I think a lot of men do. I have a male friend who reads a lot and he's kind of into sci-fy books.

  4. I felt the same way about The Fold, it was really interesting and entertaining until things started to get all action packed and just plain weird. I thought the ending could have been so much better. It was a big disappointment when I got to the end of the audiobook. I do quite enjoy Fantasy and Sci-Fi though, I read pretty much only Fantasy and shake it up with a little Sci-Fi here and there.

    1. Hallelujah it wasn't just me! Yeah, the action adventure ending just threw me and like you said, made it weird. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. You know, I really haven't read much Jennifer Ashley. I've picked up a few random books that were available at the library, but I haven't read any of her series straight through. I really should.

  6. I love that reading challenges push us outside our comfort zones! :) I don't read a lot of science fiction either, but I do love fantasy. This sounds interesting, but the ending sounds like a bummer. I am also recently kilt obsessed, I just finished the first Outlander book! Le sigh. XO - Alexandra

  7. I rarely read sci-fi either, but the stuff I've read in past years (Red Rising series, Dark Matter, The Martian) were more mainstream and palatable.

  8. I hate it when a book that is so good, jumps the shark and ends badly. Grrrr ... I would normally add The Fold to my TBR but knowing the ending is very likely to leave me disappointed and frustrated, I'm going to pass.

  9. I also picked sci-fi for that category in Erin's challenge, lol. I read Red Rising for it. SUCH a bummer when the ending is disappointing though, as in your case!

  10. I felt the same way. How has it already been a month since the last one? Bummer that The Fold falls flat at the end!

  11. I'm not a big sci-fi reader either but like when I'm pleasantly surprised - like when I read the Martian!

  13. That's a bummer that the last quarter of The Fold didn't live up to the rest of the book. I'm not the best the biggest fan of science fiction books either, but this one sounds good! And I love me a man in a kilt as well! I think that's why I loved Outlander so much!

  14. I haven't heard of either of these but that's what's so fabulous about this link-up :)
I always had a thing for the Steve Miller Band (but not that song lol). I start the post a month in advance and just keep track as I read.

  15. I don't read a lot of sci fi either, but I'm trying to step out and try different genres when I can. I get surprised sometimes.

  16. I don't read a lot of sci fi either, mostly ones that are about humanity under attack like World War Z which was good.
