U is for Unforgiven, Unforgettable, & Unplugged (2017 Blogging A to Z)

Welcome to my '92 Time Capsule, where I unearth artifacts and memories from a quarter century ago in alphabetical order everyday (excluding Sundays, with the exception of the 30th) during the month of April.

Today's letter is U, so here we go...

Unforgiven, a western directed by Clint Eastwood about an aging outlaw and killer, also played by Eastwood, who takes on one more job years after returning to a life of farming.

The film won four Oscars: Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, Best Supporting Actor for Gene Hackman, and Best Film Editing for editor Joel Cox. Eastwood was nominated for Best Actor, but the Oscar went to Al Pacino for his role in Scent of a Woman.

Unforgiven is the third western film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. It was added to the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2004 for its merit and significance.

"Unforgettable" is a song originally recorded by Nat King Cole in 1951.  Forty years later, Nat King Cole's original recording was edited and remixed to create a duet with his daughter, Natalie Cole.  "Unforgettable" won three Grammy Awards in 1992:  Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance.

Unplugged is a 1992 album by Eric Clapton.  The album was recorded in front of a live audience for the MTV Unplugged series.  Unplugged won three Grammy Awards in 1993 (Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, Album of the Year, and Best Rock Song for "Layla"), came in at number 36 on the Billboard 200 Year End Chart for 1992, and has sold 26 million copies worldwide.

On a personal note, I've always thought the lyrics for "Unforgettable," despite being so simple and short, were incredibly touching.

Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more

Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too

Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too

How about you?  Have you seen Unforgiven? Do you like "Unforgettable" or Unplugged?  What are your thoughts on any of these "un" topics?

As always, thanks for stopping by!

  1. I have not seen unforgiven, not a big fan of westerns; I don't really like remake songs with added vocals but this version with the two Coles sounded really good to me. I'm not familiar with unplugged but I have always like Clapton's 'tears in heaven' - such a sad, sad song but somehow uplifting in a strange way

    have a lovely day.
