Top Ten Tuesday: Series I've Given Up On/Don't Plan to Finish

Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich

I enthusiastically gobbled up the first fifteen or so books in this series.  However, by the eighteenth installment, my interest started to wain.  The series, in my opinion, became stagnant and the books were no longer as funny as they once were.  It also drove me crazy that Stephanie's hamster, Rex, never aged and she still couldn't make up her mind between Morelli and Ranger.

Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

I enjoyed the first book and the four smaller prequel stories in this series. The second book, Insurgent, was okay.  By the time I got around to reading the third one, several people I know had already read it and had expressed how much they disliked it.  I kept putting it off and putting it off until it finally became apparent that I had lost interest in the story as a whole.

Crazy Rich Asians Series by Kevin Kwan

I thought the first book in this series, Crazy Rich Asians, was hilarious!  I really had a lot of laugh out loud moments!  But, with the second installment the funniness started to wain and most of the characters and their circumstances became hard to relate to.

Women's Murder Club Series by James Patterson

I think I read the first three books in this series and then my interest just wained. I don't know why, it just did, and as more time has passed, I haven't missed it.

Sisterhood Series by Ann Brashares

The first one was good but the story in general didn't pique my interest enough to read the second one.

Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling

I was late to game in reading this uber popular book.  Although it was entertaining, it wasn't my cup of tea.  I couldn't see myself reading any further.

Bridget Jones Series by Helen Fielding

I was perfectly fine with the way this book ended and wasn't interested in reading any more.

To be perfectly honest, I found this book to be average and it didn't make much of an impression on me.  I saw no point in continuing the series.

The first book in the series was cute and all, but I simply wasn't interested enough to read the next one.

I enjoyed this book but was perfectly fine with the way it ended.  I had absolutely no desire to know what the next book had in store.

Is there a book series that you've given up on and don't plan to finish? How do you feel about abandoning a series that you've begun?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. I don't know that I quit book series as much as I quit TV or movie series. I did read (and own) all of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants back when I was in college and I really liked it then but reading it as a true adult would be pointless.

    1. I feel less guilty about abandoning book series than I do about abandoning a book once I've started it. But, in the last 4-5 years, I've gotten better at saying "screw it" bc life is simply way too short to read books that aren't doing it for me. :)

  2. If the reads are easy, I will usually stick with a series once I start it. I couldn't give 50 pages into Crazy Rich Asians.

The first Bridget book will always be the best - the others were not necessary and I will not read the last.

Never started a lot of these, including Potter. To each her own and that's not my interest.

    1. I like that - unnecessary. That's how I feel about many followup books (and movie sequels for that matter, too). I gave HP the old college try, but it's not my cup of tea.

  3. I've given up on several of these as well: Stephanie Plum, The Women's Murder Club, and Bridget Jones.

    1. Stephanie Plum (from what I've seen on other blogs today) is very popular in terms of abandoning. LOL!

  4. I really want to read Bridget Jones' Diary, but admit I have no interest in the sequel. I felt the same way about a Gayle Foreman book I read that now has a sequel. Sometimes I find it best just to leave the characters where I left them. I think I made it to book 13 or 14 in the Stephanie Plum series. I was getting mad at her for leaving those guys dangling.

    1. Ranger or Morelli... Stephanie just choose! LOL! I'm right there with ya. I enjoyed her character so much in the beginning; I just wish that she had developed more as time passed. Honestly, I don't remember that much about the Bridget Jones book bc I read it long after I had seen the movie numerous times.

  5. Even if I am 30 + I still adore Harry Potter :) I've listen to the first 4 books on audiobook and planning on continue the other 3 books in the fall. The audiobooks are so amazing.

    1. I don't think age has anything to do with the like-ability of HP. My husband, who is 50, loves them. The genre just wasn't for me; I even listened to the first one via audiobook. Enjoy!

  6. I have read and then given up on quite a few of the series you mention. The Chet and Bernie books still appeal to me, I like how the author seems to understand how Chet the dog thinks.

    1. I agree, it's a very cute premise. I think I burned myself out on animal books during that time. Looking back, I had read several animal centered books and I think that did me in.

  7. I liked Allegiant up until chapter 50. Then I believe the fanfiction instead :-).
