Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Have Been on My TBR the Longest and That I Still Haven't Read

Oh, man...  My "to be read" list is an absolute, ever-growing beast!  Seriously, every month I am adding books to it on Goodreads so I honestly have no definitive way of knowing how long some of the books have been on my TBR.

So, given that most of my book consumption is via audiobook, I turned to my Audible library, which clearly shows the date in which the audiobooks were purchased.  Here are the ten books that I've had the longest, but have yet to read:

*Please note that all of these are audiobooks and I sometimes say "read" even though it's technically "listened to."

Crash and Burn by Lisa Gardner
Purchased March 2015

Between January 2013 and May 2014, I listened to seven Lisa Gardner books, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  But, I think it's safe to say that I burned myself out on her murder mysteries because I haven't read one in three and a half years.  I'm not ruling out the possibility that I will one day pick this book back up, though.  I think I will just have to be in the right mood.

Purchased March 2015

I loved The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, the book that preceded this one and in which Queenie Hennessy plays a role.  I really thought that I would find this one as interesting and engaging as The Unlikely Pilgrimage...,  but I didn't.  I've started and stopped it several times, but...

Purchased February 2015

I made the mistake of watching the movie before reading the book.  All interest - and I mean ALL interest - gone.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth
Purchased November 2014

I listened to the first two books in this series (Divergent and Insurgent) and then my interest came to a screeching halt.  (Unfortunately this happened after I bought the third book.) I might've eventually started it if I hadn't heard how disappointed many people were in the way the series ended.  I seriously doubt I'll ever listen to it at this point.

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gaboldon
Purchased September 2014

I bought this one right after I finished Outlander and had the best of intentions to listen to it then, but a 40-hour audiobook is intimidating.  To me, that's the equivalent of 3-4 regular length books.  I've stopped and started it on numerous occasions, but then I watched season two of Outlander on STARZ, and now I have zero interest in listening to it what-so-ever.

The Mighty Storm by Samantha Towle
Purchased September 2014

I'm not sure why I bought this, but I have a feeling I might have been influenced by the man on the cover.  When it comes to smut and romance novels, I typically gravitate towards books that feature men who ride Harley's or men who wear kilts.  The guy in this book does neither, but he is a rock star and rock stars have their own unique appeal that I sometimes like.  There is hope for this one yet.

The Gods of Guilt by Michael Connelly
Purchased August 2014

I'm pretty sure I snagged this audiobook as a Daily Deal on Audible ($4.99 or less) because I thoroughly enjoyed the one book of Connelly's that I had listened to previously (The Poet).  Sadly, just like the next book, it kept getting pushed further and further down in my library.

The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly
Purchased June 2014

After finishing this book's prequel, The Poet, I quickly obtained this one.  I'm not sure what happened, but I never got around to it and it slowly kept getting moved further and further down in my library.  I might pick this book back up one day.

Purchased November 2013

After reading another of the author's books, Night Film, I was intrigued enough to buy this one.  Somewhere along the way, however, my interest wained and here we are, four years later and it's gathering virtual dust in my audiobook library.  There is still hope for this book; I'm still interested.

11/23/63 by Stephen King
Purchased November 2013 - OFFICIALLY THE BOOK THAT HAS BEEN ON MY TBR THE LONGEST

I love the premise of the book, I really do.  I also have this weird, little fascination with the JFK assassination, so, in theory, this is a book that I should've jumped on immediately and listened to years ago.  But, I haven't.  I believe I am intimidated and scared away by the length of the audiobook - 30 hours!  That's a huge time commitment.  I'm not ruling out the possibility of me reading this book one day, but with each passing year and as I continually add to my TBR, the odds are not in its favor.

What are some books that have been on your TBR the longest?  What do you think the chances are that you will ever read them?

Have a good one and happy reading!

  1. Stephen King writes some loooooong books! I love him,but they can definitely be intimidating.

I'm scared to check which books have been on my Goodreads tbr the longest. I add books to it all the time and it's just out of control! (BTW, if you go to your "to-read" list on Goodreads and organise by date then reverse it you can see which you added first. Obviously that only works if you don't have a dozen different tbr lists).

    1. Sorting my Goodreads TBR (like you mentioned), the book that has been shelved the longest, since 2014, is Dragonfly in Amber. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy also made the top ten (I shelved it in 2015). I'm still glad that I used my Audible purchases because doing it this way is more definitely eye opening. It's quite shocking to see the amount of book that I've spent money on, but have yet to listen to.

  2. Yep watching films first is a BIG mistake. I held out for a very long time on Lord of the Rings but made it in the end. (As in I finally read the books then watched the films back to back!) I struggle with audio books - usually end up falling asleep.

    1. Yes, I agree (watching films first). I listen to audiobooks while commuting, walking, and house cleaning.

  3. Those Allegiant spoilers definitely ruined the book and series for a lot of people so I don't blame you there. I don't think I've ever gotten through a Stephen King novel, granted it's been since I was a teen since I tried to. They are just so long!

  4. 11/22/63 is such an amazing book. I did the audio and it was doable!

DO NOT watch the Hulu show before you read it though. The show really condenses things.

    1. One day, I *might* try it. I just have to make sure it's not during a time when I'm in one of Erin's challenges. A 30 hour audiobook will take me... weeks (especially now that I have a shorter commute). Thanks for the heads up about the Hulu show.

  5. I saw the movie for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Heard of the Stephen King, but it's way too long (over 800 pages). Hadn't heard of any of the others.

San Diego Noir's been on my shelf since 2011. I think I'll read it this year though.

    1. Yes... 11/23/63 is a BEAST! I just don't think I have the strength... LOL! Good luck on your TBR!

  6. I counted my physical TBR pile last year and it's been my goal since then to whittle that beast down. I went from 139 to 80-ish but honestly, a lot of that was from passing books on that I no longer had interest in. I've read about 10.

I think this is just the curse of beign a book blogger though. We'll always have a pile of unread books lol

    1. I go in periodically and do a major house cleaning on my TBR. Often I will think to myself, "Why did I put this on here?" LOL! I guess my interests and taste is fluid and ever changing. You are probably right. I'm connected with so many other bookish bloggers that I'm always being exposed to new books. So many books, only so many hours in the day...

  7. Dragon Tattoo book was better than the movie...unless you've seen the Swedish movie, in which case they're about the same

    1. No, I saw the American one with Daniel Craig. I just have a feeling that "the ship has sailed" with this book.

  8. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo book was so much better than the movie. I loved the book, loathed the movie. I thought 11/22/63 was actually quite good and a surprisingly fast read. I did the e-book though because the physical book is such a brick to lug around, lol.

  9. I've wanted to read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (and the other books in the series) for quite a while now, but I've never gotten around to it. I've also never gotten around to watching any of the movies after the first one. (I watched the original Swedish film, and I really enjoyed it ... But it was LONG.)

I can understand not wanting to listen to books advertised at 30 or 40 hours long. That's crazy! To be fair, I don't do audiobooks (I tried one once and it was just terrible on so many levels), but I think I'd have a hard time picking up a physical book if it said on the cover something like "This book will take 3 weeks to read if you read an average of 75 pages a day." Knowing something like that up-front might make me shy away from the book.

Night Film actually almost made my Top Ten Tuesday list this week!

  10. I liked Divergent and Insurgent, but I`ll never pick up Allegiant. I`ve heard how it ends and I`m not going through that disappointment.

  11. Like you said, my TBR stacks are beasts and they live in many room of my house. I do like Michael Connelly a lot. I have some P.G. Wodehouse books waiting for my attention.

  12. I do believe I have a few from Gardner on my shelves. Hard when ya burn yourself out like that on a genre. I did that to myself with urban fantasy years ago.
