A is for Aladdin & Andrew (2017 Blogging A to Z)

As anyone who knows me can attest, I reserve the right to change my mind at any given time.  I've been on the fence since the 2016  Blogging A to Z Challenge concluded as to whether I would participate this year.  As of February, despite having done a lot of the prep work, I decided that I would sit this year out.  Well, I've changed my mind, again.  So, having said that...

Welcome to my '92 Time Capsule, where I unearth artifacts and memories from a quarter century ago in alphabetical order everyday during the month of April (excluding Sundays, with the exception of the 30th).

Today's letter is A, so here we go...

Aladdin, a Disney animated musical film,  was released on November 25, 1992 and became the most successful film of the year, grossing $504 million worldwide.  The animation is based on the story Aladdin and the Magic Lamp from One Thousand and One Nights and starred many notable voice actors such as the late Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried.

Aladdin went on to win two Oscars - Best Music, Original Score and Best Music, Original Song for "A Whole New World."  The radio single version of "A Whole New World" was sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle.

The wildly successful film also inspired two direct to video sequels (The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves) and was the inspiration for the Broadway adaptation  of the same name that debuted in 2014.

Andrew, a category 5 hurricane, roared ashore along Florida's southern Atlantic coast on August 24, 1992.  Andrew was, at the time of its occurrence, the most destructive hurricane in United States history, causing an estimated $26.5 billion in damages.  To date, Andrew is considered the fifth most costliest Atlantic hurricanes behind Katrina (2005, $108 billion), Sandy (2012, $75 billion), Ike (2008, $37.5 billion), and Wilma (2005, $24.9 billion).

The name Andrew was officially retired and will never again be used as a name for an Atlantic Hurricane.

On a personal note, Aladdin remains to this day, one of my favorite Disney animations.  Robin William's vocal performance as Genie, is one of my personal favorites.

I hope this finds you having a wonderful weekend! As always, thanks for stopping by.

  1. I don't really remember the movie because all I remember is Robin Williams, honesty, if he was not doing the voice, I don't think the movie would be as good.

    have a lovely day.

  2. I like your theme! That's crazy the top four costliest Hurricanes were all around the same time period...quite a few years after Andrew!

I LOVE Aladdin. It's definitely one of my top favorite Disney films. :)

    1. Thank you! Last year, I had no theme and I was on the fence as to whether it was a hindrance or not. I'm kind of shocked that I was able to come up with a cohesive theme to tell the truth.

  4. Oh wow, what a great topic! I was in school in Pensacola during Andrew - we didn't get hit directly but there was enough wind that we (stupidly) found it entertaining to go lay under a palm tree and watch it sway. We also went to the beach... what were we thinking??

    1. Thank you! I'm having a hard time keeping up with comments, so I apologize for the delay in responding. Laying under a palm tree in a hurricane! WOW! Well, chances are everyone has a few of those "What the HELL was I thinking?" moments from their youth. Glad you lived to tell the tale. Thank you for stopping by!
